Quick Healthy Lunches for kids

By Monica Groover!

Monica is a faculty at san diego college of Ayurveda

We all know that you are rushed in the morning, evening, or weekends. So, like many parents, you buy packaged processed lunches from the supermarket, Packaged juices, packaged milk -its quick, its convenient – AND, it claims to have all the necessary vitamins, minerals and nutritional value that we are supposed to give to our kids.

Right!

Wrong!

Contrary to popular belief, you are not only paying MORE for this processed food like substance, but, there are hidden chemicals, high fructose corn syrup and many other substances that are ‘hidden’ from the consumers. This is especially true for unorganic meat products. In fact, the cheaper the meat and food – the lower it is in any value. In fact, white bread, white flour is pure junk in nutritional value. Why not make whole wheat, and whole grain flour for making cookies, cakes or pancakes. Use Agave Nectar instead of sugar! Make Vegetable and Mixed Fruit Smoothies!

Dont want to cook fresh food! No problems! Buy organic, natural food from Jimbos or Whole Foods or your local health food store! No matter, how ‘cheap’ there is no substitute for HEALTHY lunches. No amount of claims by adverstisers, and, no matter how busy we are, there IS no substitute for health.

Ayurveda for Life

By Rebecca Neu - Student - San Diego College of Ayurveda

According to researchers, Ayurveda is about 5000 years old, because that is how far back they can trace the earliest surviving writings ofAyurveda. However, it is believed that Ayurveda began with the beginning of civilization and was passed down orally until it was able to be written down 5000 years ago.

Ayurveda is a relatively new term coined by the sage Charaka, one of the more contemporary reorganizers of Ayurveda. The first impressions of Ayurveda are found in the fourth Veda, Atharva Veda which Sage Veda Vyasa received the knowledge of the Vedas during meditation. It is believed that this holistic medical system was passed down by the gods to the sages in India and then to us. Ayurveda recognizes that every individual is different and has different needs to obtain and maintain wellness. In particular people can be categorized into different body types by the dominance (or lack of) certain doshas (or humors) in their body.

Therefore, while one food product may be balancing and healthy for one type of dosha, it can be poison or unbalancing to another type due to the differing natures of the doshas. For example, the Pitta dosha consists of lots of fire, heat, and energy, while the kapha dosha is cool, damp, and slow moving. Dairy has a cool and subduing nature, therefore to balance pitta it is perfect because it complements its elements by being of opposite nature. However, with Kapha, since the natures are alike, it will exacerbate Kapha further and throw it into overabundance and thus imbalance.  read more,

Ama – Toxins cause Disease

By Monica Groover - Faculty, San Diego College of Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda, the holistic health system from India – Ama or toxins are the cause of disease in the body. These are not western toxins – bacteria, virus, foreign bodies within the body. The AMA toxins are produced by undigested food in the body. When we overeat, eat meat or animal products including too much diary, or even fasting, or overeating raw foods can lead to undigested food within the GI tract. This food becomes fermented and poisonous. This becomes AMA. Ama causes disease. Read More

Panchakarma

Monica Groover

Panchakarma literally means 'Five Karmas'. It is a five fold process of cleansing and healing the mind, body and soul. Originating thousands of years ago in India, Panchakarma is both a healing and preventive process.

Panchakarma is an excellent way to PREVENT disease because by following the five fold practices recommended in Caraka Samhita, or Astanga Vagbhatta, the ancient treatise for Ayurveda, people can detoxify their system, strengthen their immunity and lymphatic system, remove impurities and and balance their bodily imbalance, mind and body.

Panchakarma is also healing since it complements modern medicine, especially people recovering from illness, no longer on medication who are gaining their strength back. Overuse of medication, surgeries or illness can take a toll on the human body. Panchakarma practices help get rid of all the side effects by eliminating toxins and helps the body rebuild its natural defences.

Panchakarmais based on the fact that everyday we ingest toxins either from the environment, overuse of medicines or allergens - all of which tend to accumulate and eventually create disease and imbalance. Panchakarma helps cleanse these foreign bodies and and restores the body’s natural defences.

Panchakarma is also great as a beauty aid, as an anti ageing therapy that help restore and hydrate the hair, face and body.

For Panchakarma treatments, or to buy Panchakarma Products, Panchakarma Chai, Churnas, Herbal Steam Powders from Ayurvedic Integrated Wellness, buy online or order by phone.
